A 1932 Ford pickup went under the hammer for $250,000 and set the pace for a record truck sale at last week’s 2012 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction.

Overall, buyers paid almost $5.4 million (including the auction commission) to take the keys of 149 trucks and pickups sold at the auction last week. That equates to an average of $36,241 per truck.

“Barrett-Jackson has always been a marker for collector car trends, and this year we experienced the growing fascination with pickup trucks,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson.

The top-selling custom pickup (Lot 1305.5, shown above on the auction block) was built by Stinger’s Hot Rod Shop. The truck emulates a Harry Miller Indy racing truck if such a class existed in the 1930s. It was estimated that 90 percent of the truck was hand-built. It features a Donovan inline-four-cylinder, Tremec five-speed transmission, quick-change rear end, Bendix-style brakes, 19-inch Dayton wire wheels and paint from Rad Rods by Troy. With the 10 percent auction commission, total price to the buyer was $275,000.

A 1927 roadster that fits everyone.  Stinger’s Hot Rod Shop produced the ultimate Track T package.  This package includes a stretched fiberglass body with opening doors and deck lid, grille shell, and body pans.  All of Stinger’s fiberglass bodies and parts are hand laminated to give them the highest level of strength and quality.  We think you will agree, this ’27 roadster is the straightest on the market making the builder’s job much easier by minimizing the body work. The precise alterations to the glass body are done so well that the originality still exists.

The Miller Hauler colors.  The colors Stinger pick for the little truck were chosen even before he finished his last mock-up of the Hauler.  The Green Brian picked is called Lotus New Racing Green (Beach Craft).  It is Chroma One Dupont…paint number K9349G which was changed to Glasurit products using codes off the Chroma One.  The Yellow is a custom mix…”Martha Stewart 106″…that his wife picked while visiting LOWE’S.  The inside frame box plate, x-member, cross-member…is Dupont MM097.  The driveline, engine, transmission, drive-shaft, rear-end…is Dupont MM085.  The louvers on the truck are polished.  That look was applied because Brian liked the look of some louvers on various Duesenbergs he had seen.  The polished louvers fit with the polishing of the Miller grille.  Stinger actually did a number of paint test panels before picking each color and the correct look for the louvers.  Thanks to Moose (louver polish)…Warren (paint) and Tom Evans striping.

STINGER’S HOT ROD SHOP

The creative bed supports were fabricated by Stinger out of 3/8 Inch tubing.  The tubing was heat and bent around a buck that Stinger made.  The flat steel is 1/4 Inch and Stinger drilled and counter sunk the holes.  The supports on the tailgate area are made to look just like the side bed supports but they double as a tailgate stop and latch pins.
